It Just Wasn't my Day: Paddling the Cohocton River l Swift Dragonfly l Northstar Phoenix l Canoeing
What can I say, it just wasn't my day on the Cohocton river. April 21st 2024 myself and friend Marty put in on the upper portion of the Cohocton river at Wentworth Road near Avoca, NY and paddled 8.5 miles to our takeout. We encountered calm water, swift water, tight turns, strainers and some blow down. There were two times where we would have to exit the river and drag our canoes through the woods and brush to get around the blow down.
I got caught in some rapids and the current took the stern of my boat turning me sideways and that is all she wrote. I also had an incident with a downed tree.
My Swift Dragonfly got a whole lot of new scratches on it and Marty's Northstar Phoenix faired ok as well. At least Marty stayed in the boat...LOL..
Despite my mishaps it was a good day on the river nonetheless, cheers!

Back in 2021 I called an outfitter in the Adirondacks of New York wondering if they had any used Northstar "Northwind Solos". They said no but they had one brand new one in starlite layup with aluminum trim on order if I was interested. So I put a deposit on it. I arrived under darkness, exiting my car peering upward towards the heavens. The unpolluted night sky was alive with the moon, stars, clouds and I believe Venus. I rubbed my hands together with excitement and commented to myself "I think we have the makings of a beautiful sunrise" as I carried my canoe to the lake. The narrow beam from my headlamp pierced the darkness and I could feel the the d...

I used to wade the Cohocton near Painted Post. I would catch Fallfish and SMB. I also canoed the Tioga and Chemung R in my Mad River Explorer 17. Now I’m looking for a light weight canoe. Thanks for the video.

Being relatively new to paddling I don't think I would be very comfortable in such a tippy/nervous canoe. I'm very happy with my recent purchase of a Swift Prospector 15 maybe when I'm more experienced I would enjoy a more lively/maneuverable craft. Enjoyed the video thanks for posting

It's just a little narrower and quicker in my opinion and I'm just a big fan of Hemlock canoes. I'v now have it set up for sit and switch paddling which I enjoy.

I see you sold the Northwind solo and got this Peregrine. What's the difference between the two boats for you? Is one better for big choppy lakes (asking for a friend who lives near Lake Ontario!).

They are both excellent boats. I like the Peregrine better because I find I like the narrowness compared to the NW Solo. Not that there is a huge difference but it’s my personal preference

Two things I notice about your paddling: You are catching the upstream edge of your boat. When you are a little bit sideways and you're broadside to some danger, be it branches, logs, trees, or rocks, you need to lean towards the danger, not away. It is counter intuitive, you have to train yourself to do it. By leaning toward the danger the upstream edge of the boat comes up out of the current and the water lifts the boat and slides under. When you lean upstream, the upstream edge goes down and the water passing under gets more and more of a purchase on your boat, at which point you go over. And then your boat ( and your self) can get pinned or even turned inside out. The force of water is relentless. While your boat is beautiful, it is taking a lot of effort to turn. Try leaning the boat enough to get the ends out of the water, or atleast less deep. This will shorten the waterline and help you spin faster. Sweeping your paddle farther from your boat is a major help too. Bon Voyage

Hi Joe. Nice swim and recovery! I remember watching a video by Canandaigua Lake Trout Unlimited a couple of years ago regarding their stream improvement projects on this river. I commented that what they were doing might be great for trout but hazardous for paddlers (paraphrasing). I don't know if you were encountering their manmade obstacles or not, but I'm glad you survived with only a soaking. 🙂 ua-cam.com/video/AFK-_v0NVeQ/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared interesting part starts about 31:20. It's nice to know that it's your fellow man and not the beavers and ash borers that are trying to kill you!

Hmm. I love my Northwind Northstar solo--but I don't like paddling on both sides of the canoe like you do. I'm accustomed to going straight when soloing a tandem canoe-- and turning right when paddling on the right. The Northstar makes me feel like a beginer all over again. I like to correct with subtle twists of the paddle. I don't like using my paddle as a rudder. I don't like using an obvious J-stroke--never mind a Gooney stroke! I don't like prying off my gunnel either. Right now, I'm mostly using a double bladed paddle--until such time as I get the hang of this boat with a single bladed paddle. On UA-cam--everyone is switch paddling with this boat. This Is not to my taste! Perhaps when the water warms I will master leaning this boat radically. Maybe that will make the difference. I'm beginning to get an inkling of how this boat should be paddled. A long way to go yet!

I like it so much that I'm going to order another from Andy for a backup. It's great on underwater retrieves. Hey I saw that you hike the Vestal Rail Trail. My wife hiked there a couple weeks ago. We live up near Whitney Point. @@mrgjoe

@@MikeBrando473 quite honestly they are probably some of the best paddles on the market and price wise as well. Yes I live in the Endicott/Endwell area.

Question? Your video is 2 years old and i think you have since parted with your ACC boat. I see you used your Hornbeck alot this past year. I'm looking at buying either a ACC or the Hornbeck within the next couple of month. My question is why you decided to part with the Adirondack and choose the Hornbeck ? Does the Hornbeck paddle better, especially with extra gear or is it more durable (hull wise) ? I've seen alot of negative feedback about the seat being uncomfortable especially on longer paddles. My intention is primarily canoe camping and fishing trips,so i do plan spending alot of hours in my boat. Thanks Joe & happy paddling.

Hi Randy, thank you for commenting. I purchased my first Hornbeck in 2015 (New Tricks 12). In 2019 I purchased an ACC Boreas and in 2020 I sold my New trick 12 and boat a New Trick 14. Both boats are similar and I found the NT 14 to be a bit zippier. Both are excellent canoes and IMO you cannot go wrong with either one. I sold the ACC Boreas only because a friend was looking for a light weight pack canoe for a decent price. It was not a reflection on the boat whatsoever. To answer your seating question they are pack boats and you sit low. So yes I'm willing to say that they can become somewhat uncomfortable on really long days. I use my Hornbeck primarily in the Adirondacks where I'm pond hopping so you are in & out of the boat a bit and for me the seat does not really bother me. Now I will say this, back in September I spent sometime up at Swift Canoe in Algonquin Park and paddled a pack boat for an entire day and hands down they have the most comfortable seat on the market. For me personally if I was ever to add another pack canoe to my fleet it would be a Swift. Yes they are very pricey but the options are endless. I purchased a Swift Dragonfly (Traditional Canoe) back in 2023 and had it custom done for me and I love it. Good luck in your research.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply, trust me i'm familiar with Swift. Honestly hands down swift makes the nicest boat on the market,i've researched every shape & size from a Keewayden,Prospector,Pack to the Cruiser. The seat in anyone of the pack models is far superior to anything out there, right down to the adjustable lambeck support. Bill makes the very best of the best! I'm concerned that somewhere down the road it might need to be repaired, which is why i'm looking local,i'm 2 hours drive time from both Hornbeck & Adirondack. They are both about half the price of a Swift, which also is a factor. I'd love a Keewayden and i'm certain one day i'll bite the bullet and have to buy one. Appreciate the advice, you own so many top notch boats...i knew you would be the guy to ask. Thanks man & Happy Paddling !

@@randallteal6408 I paddled the Cruiser 15.8 pack all day for an entire day while in Algonquin and yeah a great boat and seat. As far as price and ease of repair I totally agree with you. It took me a while as well to bite the bullet on a Swift. But Like I said you cannot go wrong with either a Hornbeck of ACC. There is also Slipstream Watercraft here in NY not sure if you'd looked at them as well?

Very nice looking boat. I think the wood really works great with the color. My Phoenix has aluminum trim and I love the look along with the Blacklite layup. It just works. Wood tends to feel nicer though and is warmer, so I get the desire for it. Not all my videos show the full canoe, but this one does. LOL You will notice I also added the Sitbacker on the seat as well as the foam on the gunwales where my knees tend to rest. Hey, it's the little things. ;) Can't wait to get back on the water come spring. ua-cam.com/video/fQXeEI0Pkqk/v-deo.html
